Description:

Near East, the Levant, Canaanite people, Middle Bronze Age IIA, ca. 1950 to 1750 BCE. An outstanding Canaanite bronze fertility goddess with two petite children by her side - all flat cast and depicted nude, though the goddess is bejeweled with two collar necklaces, multiple bracelets adorning wrists to elbows, and a belt around her narrow waist. She stands erectly with a near perfect symmetrical form comprised of round sloping shoulders, curved arms, hands placed upon ample hips with fingertips pointing toward her locus of fertility, and conical breasts. Her visage presents raised ring-shaped eyes, a projecting beak-like nose, and dimple-like depressions above her eyes - topped by a disk-like ornament. Note the comparable example that sold at Christie's (link shown below) is very similar but our example also includes two flanking children (see more in the extended description below). An exceedingly rare idol in excellent condition with gorgeous green as well as areas of bluish azurite patina! Size: 9.875" H (25.1 cm); 10.625" H (27 cm) on included custom stand.

The two petite figures who flank the goddess are considerably smaller; this scale differential suggests that they represent children - particularly since the goddess' loci of fertility are most definitely emphasized. They children were also created with similarly long, slender bodies, disc-shaped heads, rounded shoulders, slender legs, and nearly identical facial features. They differ in that they possess more petite breasts and they each have on hand placed on their hips and the other making a more communicative gesture - the one on the left pointing upward toward the goddess.

A similar goddess figure - though without the smaller figures that this example has - sold for $242,500 at Christie's New York - 8 June 2012, Lot 43 - https://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-syrian-bronze-goddess-middle-bronze-age-5567183-details.aspx
