Description:

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaan, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A fine cast-bronze axe head of the characteristic 'duckbill' shape with a cylindrical hafting socket atop the stocky blade. This narrow axe head bears ovoid perforations that increase its aerodynamic efficiency when swung. A thick layer of patina in hues of mottled brown, russet, and green coats this weapon. This axe head style comes from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. A fine example! Size: 4.5" W x 2" H (11.4 cm x 5.1 cm); 5.125" H (13 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Dallas, Texas, USA collection, acquired 1990s; ex- Civilization Gallery collection and was aquired under the supervision of Dr Kilinsky head of SMU archeology department
