Description:

Ancient Near East, the Levant, Canaan, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 1950 to 1539 BCE. A wonderful cast-bronze axe head of the characteristic 'duckbill' form with a pair of openwork hafting slots behind stocky blade. This wide axe head bears enormous 'eyes' in the center. These ovoid perforations increase aerodynamic efficiency when swung. A rich layer of mottled brown, russet, and green patina covers this weapon. This is the style of axe head from Hazor, which is described in the Book of Joshua as the head of the Canaanite city-states, and the site of one of Joshua's most important victories in the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land. Size: 2.75" L x .75" W x 4.5" H (7 cm x 1.9 cm x 11.4 cm); 3.65" H (9.3 cm) on included custom stand.
