Description:

Ancient Near East, Canaan, the Levant, ca. 1st millennium BCE. A skillfully carved alabaster pyxis displaying a gently rounded base, a cylindrical body, a conical neck, and a circular, lipped rim. Boasting creamy hues of grey and tan with natural white striations, the alabaster surface of the ancient vessel has been carefully incised with a lovely series of slender horizontal bands on its sloping shoulder and around its body, while a thick raised ring delineates the shoulder from the body. The pyxis form is found throughout the ancient Near East and the Classical world and was probably imported to the ancient Levant from Mycenaean Greece. Examples such as this remind us of the interconnected trade world of the ancient Mediterranean and the rich cultural milieu of the past. Size: 3.625" in diameter x 2.75" H (9.2 cm x 7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
