Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Campania, ca. 350 to 320 BCE. Blackware terracotta oil vessel of rounded form with spooled foot, round single handle, tall spout and decorated on the top with an image of Apollo - in relief. Unlike most images on Greek ceramics, Apollo is shown in semi-profile, something I have not seen in 30+ years of collecting and dealing in ancient art. Lovely example! Size: 4.25" W x 3.5" H (10.8 cm x 8.9 cm)

A guttus like this example would have been used by the ancients for holding precious oil to fill oil lamps.
