Description:

Cambodia, Khmer Dynasty, Bayon Style, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. Large and finely carved stone statue of Lokesvara - the Bodhisattva of infinite compassion; standing nude above the waist with patterned pantaloons and floral belt, multiple arms to each side, hair in tight knot with crown depicting a seated Buddha. This is likely the image of the Buddha Amitaba from whom he emanates. In Mahayana Buddhism, the Bodhisattva is the one who, despite having achieved spiritual enlightenment, chooses to remain among humankind to help them find the way to salvation. Since the 12th century, it was considered that the body of Bodhisattva Lokesvara was a macrocosm and that each door of his skin was a universe in which meditated a little Buddha. Lokesvara is known as the Lord of compassion. During the reign of Khmer King Jayavarman VII, his cult enjoyed an unprecedented favor. Size: 20"H (50.8 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Alan Stone Collection, New York. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
