Description:

Southeast Asia, Cambodia, Khmer, ca. 13th century CE. A petite standing bronze depiction of Prajnaparamita, the personification of the Mahayana Buddhism tradition's text of that same name, which was written in the 8th century. The goddess is depicted with a crown, half sari, holding a lotus bud and sutra, adorned with necklace, arm bands, bracelets, and ankle bands. The name Prajnaparamita means "the Perfection of Transcendent Wisdom" and derives from the Sanskrit prajna (wisdom) and paramita (perfection). The emergence of the goddess of this name indicated the growing importance of the Bodhisattva and female counterpart Tara. Prajnaparamita was seen as the embodiment of knowledge and is often associated with Manjusri, the Buddhist personification of wisdom. A beautiful work with gorgeous blue/green patina. Black museum-quality wood display base. Size: 3-3/4" x 1-1/2" (9.5 x 3.8 cm)
