Description:

Jurassic Period, ca. 206 to 144 million years ago. This is Camarasaurus caudal (tail) vertebra; is from the famous Bone Cabin Quarry in Wyoming. Camarasaurus was a giant sauropod, like Diplodocus or Brachiosaurus, and is the most commonly found sauropod in North America. Camarasaurus's name means "chambered lizard" because of the hollow chambers in its vertebrae. The evolutionary function of these chambers is weight-saving and they are one of the reasons why paleontologists today accept that birds (who also have hollow bones) are descendants of dinosaurs. The Camarasaurus lived in a very different Wyoming than the one we know today; interior western North America during the Jurassic period was a shallow, warm, sea. Camarasaurus and other dinosaurs that it coexisted alongside left behind their footprints and bodies in these shallow waters; when the Rocky Mountains were formed in the Laramide Orogeny 70-80 million years ago, the rocks bearing their fossilized remains were thrust upwards and exposed. This is why some of the richest fossil beds in the world are along the edges of the Rocky Mountains. Size: 13" tall, 8" wide, and 6" deep.
