Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Valle Del Cauca, Calima culture, Ilama phase, ca. 600 to 200 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery alcarraza vessel covered in red slip and exhibiting an intriguing and characteristically abstract anthropomorphic body. The vessel features a slightly rounded but stable base, a wide piriform body, a pair of conical spouts and a strap handle emanating from the verso, and a tall 'neck' that doubles as the figure's head. A pair of applied arms bend across the front of the vessel, and a pair of tab-shaped feet extend from the base. The stylized visage features a pair of slender, almond-shaped eyes with petite pupils, a slender nose, a frowning mouth, and a pair of tubular ear ornaments, all beneath a lozenge-shaped hat that has a pinched brim section off to one side. Size: 6.75" W x 8.7" H (17.1 cm x 22.1 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated.
