Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Calima region, Yotoco culture, ca. 100 BCE to 800 CE. A toad- or frog-shaped stirrup vessel with a knobbled texture to its surface and a dynamic pose pushed up on its powerful front legs. Slipped earthy red pigment gives it a colorful surface, with the spouts, handle, head, and fee, all painted brightly in red and cream hues. The Calima people lived in the southwestern highlands by the Caribbean coast, and are famous for their goldwork, but they also produced charming pottery figures like this one. Size: 4.6" W x 4.8" H (11.7 cm x 12.2 cm)

  • Condition: Intact; small surface wear to handle and the frog's spots. Bright remaining color and manganese deposits overall. A large quantity of sediment in the center of the vessel may be intentional (a rattle), or more likely just a result of deposition.
