North America, United States, California, ca. 20th century CE. A fascinating wood sculpture depicting a pair Miwoks - native people of Northern California - leading the Franciscan missionary and explorer Father Juan Crespi through the dessert. Wearing loincloths and holding bows, the Miwoks walk ahead as Juan follows on horseback draped in black robes with a metal crucifix strung around his neck. All are adorned with cloth, animal hide, fur, and human hair. In 1772, Crespí accompanied Captain Pedro Fages on an exploration of areas to the east of San Francisco Bay. The Fages expedition members were the first Europeans to see the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin Valley. This sculpture likely served as an educational diorama in a museum.
