Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Zeno, 474 to 491 CE, Constantinople Mint, ca. 476 to 491 CE. Gold solidus. Obverse: D N ZENO - PERP AVG, diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman. Reverse: VICTORIA AVGGG I, angel standing left, holding long cross; star in right field, CONOB in exergue. Originally named Tarasis Kodisa Rousombladadiotes, Zeno's tumultuous reign was troubled by revolts and religious dissension. It was his reign that saw the end of the Western Roman Empire.
