Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, reign of Theophilus, ca. 829 to 842 CE. Obverse: crowned facing bust of Theophilus, wearing chlamys, holding patriarchal cross and akakia; star at beginning of legend, T at end / Crowned facing busts of Michael and Constantine, each wearing chlamys; cross above. Theophilus was crowned as co-emperor in 820 CE and shortly thereafter was married to Theodora. In 829 CE Theophilus became sole emperor. During his reign he dispatched architects and engineers to construct fortresses which would anchor Byzantium’s northern defenses against the Vikings and the Magyars (Hungarians). Sear 1653, D.O. 3e.
