Byzantine Empire, reign of Theodosius II, 442 to 443 CE. AV solidus (4.4 grams). Pearl-diademed, helmeted, and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear over shoulder with right hand, on left arm a shield decorated with horseman spearing an enemy below. Rev. Seated Constantinopolis. CP. Fr. 16 (9); RIC 3104.48 g. Size: 0.85" W (2.2 cm); 0.1 oz (2.8 g).

Theodosius II, also Theodosius the Younger or Theodosius the Calligrapher, reigned from 408 to 450 CE. He promulgated the Theodosian Law Code and oversaw the construction of the Theodosian Walls, a tremendous infrastructure project whose restored section can be seen today at the Selymbria Gate.
