Description:

Ancient Near East, Byzantine period, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A lovely silver ring featuring an incised bezel of Christ or a Saint shown wearing a halo with arms raised in a blessing pose. Wearing a tunic, the holy figure stands between a pair of animals, perhaps lions, while carved foliate motifs adorn the ring's shoulders. The thick band slightly tapers opposite the large, flattened bezel. Though Christian, the figural scene bears a strong resemblance to the Master of Animals motif, highlighting the historical iconography of the Ancient Near East. Size of face: 0.7" W (1.8 cm); of ring: 1" L x 0.9" W (2.5 cm x 2.3 cm); US ring size: 8.5; silver quality: 95.5%; weight: 16.9 grams

Provenance: private London, UK collection, acquired in Vienna, Austria, before 2000
