Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A gorgeous ancient ring with an ornate, wide band of silver, its exterior studded with silver granulations, and an inset, large carnelian of deep, smoky red color. Carnelians were imported from India to the Byzantine Empire and were a highly desirable jewel during this time period. Probably made to be worn by a man, based on the size. Size: 1" in diameter (2.5 cm); US ring size 7.75; 4.2 grams
