Description:

Medieval Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A molded pottery hand grenade in an elongated acorn shape for containing the flammable weapon "Greek fire". The hollow body has incised chevron patterns and three ribs running vertically up the sides to the capped top. A small nodule with an opening allows the body to be filled with combustible material and for a wick to be inserted for lighting. The exact composition of Greek fire is unknown - probably a combination of pine resin, naphtha, quicklime, and sulphur - a devastating weapon when lit. Ancient grenades were stockpiled prior to battle and only filled when they needed to be used, hence the survival of this fine example. Size: 5.65" L x 2.85" W (14.4 cm x 7.2 cm)
