Description:

Europe, late Byzantine/early medieval period, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. This is a collection of bronze objects from the late Byzantine and early medieval periods. One is a stamp seal, and the other two are small, cross-shaped pendants. All of these objects tell us something important about the life of a bishop or other high-ranking church official at this time. The stamp seal was necessary to sign off on documents and to legally give one's mark. The pendants were used, along with bells, studs, bosses, and other metal objects to decorate horse harnesses and saddles. All of these marked out their owner's rank, and many also believed them to be useful for warding against the evil eye. Size of largest: 1.8" L x 1.2" W (4.6 cm x 3 cm)

Provenance: Ex- C. Drake collection
