Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, early Byzantine Empire, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A fine cast-leaded-bronze oil lamp with a squat foot and a pair of slender nozzles. The slightly recessed rim around the fill hole suggests it was accompanied by a lid at one time, and a pair of integral suspension rings enables the lamp to hang via a pair of chains and a ring loop. Mottled layers of russet, green, and dark brown patina cover all surfaces of this fine vessel. Size (w/ chain): 3.7" L x 1.4" W x 4.9" H (9.4 cm x 3.6 cm x 12.4 cm); 6.25" H (15.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Zaveloff collection, Lakewood, New Jersey, USA, acquired in 2002 from Venus Gallery, Israel
