Description:

Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 12th centuries CE. This is a solid gold pectoral cross beautifully inlaid with cabochon garnets with a suspension loop on back. A typical Byzantine way of using gemstones was to cut them into polished cabochons and set them in collets. The gem became more important than the gold in Byzantine times and less effort is put into gold surrounding big gemstones. Size: 1.2" W x 1.8" H (3 cm x 4.6 cm), weighing 4.5 grams.

Provenance: Ex-private London collection.
