Constantine X Doukas (Ducas) was an unpopular ruler, and during his reign he lost most of Italy to the Normans, and other territories to the Turks and Hungarians. He introduced mercenaries and stacked the Senate with his friends, creating a bloated and ineffectual military bureaucracy just as the multiple groups threatened the Empire's borders. He also lost the support of most of the population when he raised taxes to pay his army.
