Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine empire, ca. 4th to 9th century CE. An incredibly gorgeous piece of ancient glass which has taken on exquisite fiery iridescence in every color of the rainbow. Somewhat roughly circular and impressed with an ancient Chi Ro cross. Chi Ro are the first two letters in the name of Jesus Christ in early Greek text. This incredibly beautiful and equally incredibly rare example has been set into a 22K brooch bezel designed by famous jewelry maker Jean Mahie. Mahie's jewelry can be found at such prestigious establishments as Van Cleef and Arpel, Neiman Marcus, Fred Leighton and others. Back of brooch inscribed "US 277." Size: 1.75" W x 1.875" H (4.4 cm x 4.8 cm); quality of gold: 92%
