Byzantine Empire, Manuel I Comnenus, ca. 1143 to 1180 CE. Aspron Trachy, Constantinople mint. A large, cup shaped billon coinage (Aspron Trachy) of copper and silver in a modern 18K gold pendant setting. Description of the coin: Christ bearded and nimbate, wearing tunic and colobium, seated upon throne without back, holds Gospels in left hand. Dot in each limb of nimbus cross. Reverse: Manuel I on left, holding labarum and cross on globe, being crowned by Mary on right, both standing facing; M between their heads. Three jewels on emperor's loros between waist and collar piece. Loros waist has 5 pellets in upright cross, collar has 5 jewels. Reference is Sear 1966. A stunning pendant featuring this ancient coin in a modern 18K gold setting. Size: coin pendant is 1.125" in diameter (2.9 cm); modern cord measures 26" L (66 cm); weight: 5.1 grams
