Description:

Ancient Near East, Byzantine period, ca. 8th to 12th century CE. An intriguing depiction of Christ finely carved from bovine or ungulate bone. Adorned with a crown of thorns, the gaunt divinity leans his bearded head to his right while raising his left shoulder. A loincloth, intricately rendered with several incised lines representing folds, hangs from his hips under a sunken abdomen that highlights his emaciated appearance. His slender legs lay straight, meeting at the feet where they are pierced with a small drill hole. A gorgeous yet chilling example from the Byzantine world. Size: 1" W x 3.875" H (2.5 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
