Description:

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 13th century CE. A fine bronze reliquary cross consisting of two matching sides, each depicting the minimalist human effigy perhaps of a saint. Both sides of the reliquary were attached to the hinged bale above at one time and, along with a bottom clasp, enabled the owner to place small prayers or reliquary items within the hollow interior. Each figure holds their arms out at their sides, revealing the flowing vestments they wear, with a flame-shaped object next to each hand; the names of each figure are incised above their heads. Size: 1.75" W x 3.7" H (4.4 cm x 9.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-Provos collection, Bremen, Germany, acquired prior to 1990
