Byzantine, modern-day Middle East / Turkey, ca. 400 to 600 CE. This bronze oil lamp could have been hung on a hook inside or outside the home. It has a handsome bronze camelid, perhaps even a horse, at the top of the chain for carrying. Oil lamps are some of the most common artifacts found throughout the Mediterranean area, but it is rare to find one with its hanging chain. Size: lamp itself is 5" x 3"; 10" with chain fully extended.
