Description:

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 8th to 10th century CE. A simple thurible, a cast bronze censer suspended from three bronze chains. Each chain is composed of several links of bronze chain below a long bronze wire; the three chains meet at a hammered, two-part bronze cross with a long bronze hook at its top for suspension. The body of the vessel is bowl-like, with three short legs. The body has incised lines around its exterior surface and bears light signs of use on its interior. The piece once had a lid with holes through it to allow incense to escape. Made for use in religious ceremonies. Size with chains extended: 3.5" W x 15" H (8.9 cm x 38.1 cm)
