Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 12th century CE. A lovely cast-bronze hanging incense burner with a circular foot attached to a bulbous body and an annular lipped rim. Adorned with incised bands at its foot, rim, and base, the petite vessel features three perforated suspension lugs on its mouth, each holding the bottom link of a flexible chain and featuring one long central link in the form of an extended diamond with rings at each end. The chains all meet at a sizable cast-bronze Byzantine cross topped with a hook. Enveloped in gorgeous russet and green patina, this ancient censer once burned fragrant oils, creating a multisensory religious experience and ethereal ambiance for the early Christians of Byzantium. Size: 2.75" W x 1.6" H (7 cm x 4.1 cm); 12.8" H (32.5 cm) with chains fully extended.
