Description:

Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A beautiful bronze cross with a round, silver button applied to its center. The cross has arms that widen and branch into fleur-de-lis-style motifs from each corner. Small, round, incised patterns dot the body of the cross and the center of the silver button in an irregular pattern. A long arm extends from the bottom of the cross, probably to set the cross into a pole for carrying it in a procession. Comes with custom stand. Size: 4" W x 8.35" H (10.2 cm x 21.2 cm); height on stand: 8.65" (22 cm)

The Byzantine period was a time of intense religiosity and immense wealth concentrated in religion. Against the backdrop of the Crusades and the split between the Eastern and Western branches of the Church, bronze crosses like this one played a prominent role in the everyday life of the church, whose constant rituals divided and marked each day.
