Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 7th century CE. A cast bronze bread stamp of a rectangular form spelling out the name or initials of the proprietor - SVEI - with a back handle and particularly special for its unusual miniature size. Such bread stamps were an early form of advertising, used in the daily production of bread to identify the maker from Roman times through the Byzantine era. Size: 1.375" W x .625" H (3.5 cm x 1.6 cm)
