Description:

Byzantium, ca. 6th century CE. A stunning pair of high karat (24 kt) gold and amethyst earrings, the goldwork design almost lacelike in appearance with each section of gold wire meticulously worked and joined not with solder but rather with verdigris to alter the melting point where it was applied. This technique was revealed in ancient writings - after having been lost for fifteen hundred years. Suspended below are three piriform shaped amethyst stones of marvelous deep lavender hues and translucency. An exceptional pair - truly works of art! Size: each earring measures ~ 2.25" L x 1" W (5.7 cm x 2.5 cm) including the integral hooks. Total weight: 8 grams

Provenance: private L. S. Farrow collection, Colchester Borough, United Kingdom; acquired between the late 1970's and early 1980's
