Ancient Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A stunning and wearable ring comprised of 98% gold (equivalent to 22K+ gold) with a thick band formed from twisted wires, the thinner of which coil around each shoulder terminal. The ovoid ring face is bedecked with dozens of petite gold granulations, 12 larger gold spheres, and 12 raised gold cones. The granulated gold decorations surround the rim of a raised bezel in which a mottled grey stone intaglio with dark inclusions is set. The intaglio boasts an incised depiction of an avian figure with a sinuous neck and folded wings. Size (ring): 0.9" W x 0.9" H (2.3 cm x 2.3 cm); size (intaglio): 0.375" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); US ring size 5.75; quality of gold: 98% (equivalent to 22K+); total weight: 10 grams.
