Description:

Byzantium, ca. 6th to 12th century CE. A very precious, high karat gold Byzantine cross with a large natural ruby round cabochon in the center set within a gold bezel and surrounded by gold granules. Each arm of the cross presents angled termini and is adorned with a granules arranged in a triangular form; the lower three arms are further adorned with gold spherical and seed pearl danglers. The uppermost is topped with an integral suspension loop trimmed with granules. Weight: 5.2 grams Size: 1.875" L x 1" W (4.8 cm x 2.5 cm); ruby cabochon measures ~ .22" in diameter (0.6 cm)

Given the superb workmanship required to create this piece as well as the precious nature of the high karat gold, large ruby, and pearls, this elegant cross was most likely worn by a wealthy person or a member of the clergy. Byzantium was established when the fourth century Emperor Constantine, also known as Saint Constantine, Christianized the Roman Empire and pronounced Constantinople in Byzantium as the capital. As Chistianity became a dominant force in Byzantine society, such Christian religious iconography became increasingly featured in jewelry, or as we like to call it, wearable art. Crosses, which first appeared in the fifth century, were believed to protect the wearer, assist him/her in prayers, and make miracles possible.
