Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 8th century CE. A large greenstone / jadeite ovoid stone with an incised, somewhat abstract, seated lion on its face. This is inset into a low, 14K gold bezel. The ring band is thin and flat, with sharp edges. This ring may have served as a seal. Jadeite is a rarely seen stone in Byzantine jewelry, and it may have been traded from elsewhere. Stone dimensions: .750" L x .625" W (1.9 cm x 1.6 cm); ring dimensions: 1" L x .875" W (2.5 cm x 2.2 cm); US ring size: 6; total weight (with stone): 7.3 grams
