Description:

South Africa, Botswana / Namibia, San people (Bushmen), ca. mid-20th century. A lengthy looped strand of polished ostrich shell beads and a tortoise shell pendant & storage container strung at the center. The shell is from a serrated tortoise, and the carapace is plugged with vegetal material on one end to serve as a perfume holder for powdered fragrant wood / flower petals, or as a tobacco or snuff pouch. Size of strands coiled: 13" L (33 cm); tortoise shell: 3.5" L x 2.75" W (8.9 cm x 7 cm)
