Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma, Ava Period, ca. 16th to 17th centuries CE. This is a small bronze votive temple with a seated Buddha inside of it and gilding covering its exterior. The temple is supported by six columns and has a double roof with decorative flair. This type of building is known as a pyatthat, a multi-tiered and spired roof found in Burmese royal and Buddhist architecture, especially pagodas and temples. The Buddha sits inside this small pagoda, with the folds of his clothing clearly visible. This Buddha was cast during the Ava period, a time of transition and upheaval in Burmese history, when ties with India - previously very strong - began to fall away because of the ongoing warfare and lack of centralized power. As a result, Buddha images changed from being influenced by the subcontinent to having their own Burmese style. This included depicting the Buddha in the round, as he is here, instead of with the lotus backing common to other times and places. Size: 2.5" L x 2" W x 4.5" H (6.4 cm x 5.1 cm x 11.4 cm)
