Description:

Central Europe, Germany & Poland, Urnfield & Lusatian (Lausitz) culture, Bronze Age, ca. 1300 BCE to 500 BCE. This impressive primary burial urn and lid set is part of the scarcest of all European urnfield traditions and Lusatian (Lausitz) ceramics are considered to be some of rarest pottery of the ancient world! Most Urnfield ceramics of the Bronze and Early Iron Ages are secondary pieces such as cups, small dishes and dippers, that would have accompanied a main vessel like this. The surface features a dual texture –moving upwards from the base the rough body transitions to an exceptionally smooth burnished surface that has a black glaze. The contrasting finishes make for an extremely pleasing work of ancient art, as well as a unique perspective of ancient artistic expression. Size: 11.25" L x 9" W (28.6 cm x 22.9 cm)

In Germany, the greater Urnfield Culture is known as 'Lausitz', named for the Lusatia area of eastern Germany where sites were first described in the 1800's by German pathologist and archaeologist, Rudolf Virchow (known today as the father of modern pathology). The Lusatian Culture peoples' interred cremated remains in pots dates to a time beyond central European societies, into the Early Iron Age around 500 BCE. Lusatian Culture burials usually consist of a main urn that can range from modest sizes up to very large dimensions. In most cases, secondary ceramic vessels are included in the burial urn. The people of the Lusatian Culture were mainly farmers with domesticated animals; they supplemented their diet with hunted game. Their settlements existed in both open and fortified plans.
