Description:

Central to Northern Europe, Celtic Culture, Late Bronze Age, ca. 800 to 500 BCE.

A cast copper axe head featuring a flared cutting edge, exemplifying the advanced metallurgical techniques of the Late Bronze Age. The axe head includes an ovoid opening for a handle, revealing that the interior of the blade is entirely hollow - a technological innovation of the time. This hollow socket design allowed for economical use of bronze while ensuring the strength required for a functional weapon. A set of lugs on the piece may have originally formed loops for securely attaching it to a handle. Raised motifs cast into the surface enhance its significance, suggesting it served not only as a tool of war but also as a symbol of prestige. Such decorated weapons were likely buried with their owners in mounded tombs, representing their wealth and martial prowess even in death. Size: 4" L x 1.5" W (10.2 cm x 3.8 cm)
