Description:

Ancient Near East / Ancient Mediterranean, Amlash culture, ca. 1400 to 1000 BCE. A wonderful terracotta rhyton in the form of a zebu bull boasting a powerful body dominated by a huge humped back and a sweeping pair of horns. The robust animal stands upon 4 short legs, presenting a slender midsection and a bulbous posterior with a swaying tail. His elongated snout projects forward, hollowed out at the top and tapering at the tip to serve as the spout of the vessel. A petite pair of ears protrude from beneath the large horns, just at the top of the strong, thick neck. Size: 10.4" L x 5" W x 8.2" H (26.4 cm x 12.7 cm x 20.8 cm)

This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

Provenance: ex-Nancy and Dr. E.F. Simpson collection, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired from 1970 to 2000

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with break lines visible and some chipping and small losses along break lines. A few minor areas of restoration. Losses to proper left horn and right hind leg. Expected surface wear with nicks and abrasions. Otherwise, very nice with light earthen deposits. TL holes under right horn and front left hoof.
