Description:

Europe, England, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A carved white stone section of a head with a sensitively carved visage crowned by a wavy coiffure, perhaps depicting a patron memorialized in a church or an effigy of a deceased person that would have been placed above or nearby a burial vault or grave. Note how the eyes are rendered very naturalistically with sagging bags beneath to indicate the figure's age. Furthermore, the meticulous delineation of each lock of hair is quite impressive. Custom stand. Size: 6" W x 6.875" H (15.2 cm x 17.5 cm); 9.625" H (24.4 cm) on stand
