Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chavin, ca. 1200 to 500 BCE. A gorgeous necklace comprised of 27 amethyst beads, including 18 lozenge shaped amethyst beads and 9 round amethyst beads. All of the beads are ancient, biconically drilled, and present brilliant violet and lavendar hues as well as marvelous translucency. What's more, they are arranged in a lovely balanced and symmetrical design. A breathtaking piece of wearable art! Size: necklace measures 18" L (45.7 cm) with the longest bead (lozenge shape) being .875" L (2.2 cm)

The name amethyst is Greek in origin and means "not drunken." Some scholars suggest that this was due to the belief that amethyst had the power to stave off the effects of alcohol; however, most believe that the Greeks were probably referring to the near wine-like hue of some amethyst stones.
