Latin America, northern Brazil, ca. mid 20th century CE. A mixed media horse and rider sculpture. The horse is comprised of a wooden head painted with black and silver details, black rubber ears, a textile covering over a wood-framed body, the red cloth inscribed with the name "BABAU" and "Joel" (the artist?) on the front side and painted with an image of the horse's legs as well as the rider's boots and saddle (silver dotted black body for the horse, red chaps, and green saddle) along each side, and a tail comprised of a black cotton textile and animal hair. The rider is a separate piece that fits in a hole carved in the horse's back. He wears a painted rubber visored cap with "BABAU" across the front and a floral patterned cotton shirt. His carved wood face is hand painted with a determined expression, and his painted rubber hands and ears are of an exaggeratedly large scale. In Brazil, the word babau refers to a bogeyman variant who carried naughty kiddos away. Quite a fun piece! Size: 15.75" L x 12.75" H (40 cm x 32.4 cm)
