Description:

Borneo, Malay Archipelago, shared by Indonesia and Malaysia, ca. early to mid 20th century. Wonderfully attractive and whimsical carved wooden box lid by the indigenous Dayak people of Borneo. Carved from a single piece of wood with underside slightly hollowed, it sports a long crocodilian tail and body, but terminates in a head that certainly looks more equine than crocodilian, but does have a set of very sharp frontal teeth. The croc has exposed legs and claws set among foliage and slightly diagonal "waves?" The scroll to each side of the head has a very Balinese feel to it but the remainder of the carving is much more tribal. Mounted to a solid wooden plinth. Great visual appeal! Size: 21" L x 8.5" H (53.3 cm x 21.6 cm); 10.5" H (26.7 cm) on included custom stand.
