Description:

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Wild Horse Round-Up" watercolor and gouache on paper, 2013. Signed on lower right. Signed, dated, titled on verso. A striking painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton that depicts a herd of running horses integrated into the interior of a Plains Indian tipi with a view ofblue skies above through the apex of the tipi. In the artist's words, this imagery recalls "a day when wild horses ran free on the plains". All is delineated in Halsey-Dutton's lyrical manner with a rich color palette. A magical painting that pays homage to the horse, an important animal to indigenous cultures of the American West, as well as the tradition of Native American storytelling within the walls of tipis, preserving tales, legends, songs, and myths from generation to generation. Size: 17" L x 11" W (43.2 cm x 27.9 cm)

Interestingly, Halsey-Dutton has used shadowbox framing to underscore the cultural importance of the theme and suggest a treasured museum artifact. This piece is painted on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper, and the manner of paint application was intended to convey age and weathering. In addition, the paper's deckled edge further imbues the piece with a sense of history.
