Bonnie Halsey-Dutton (American, Contemporary). "Talisman" watercolor and gouache on paper, 2009. Signature and date at bottom center. Signature, title, and date handwritten on verso. A striking painting by Bonnie Halsey-Dutton depicting various Native American talismans and ritual objects, including a shield, drum, prayer bundle, feathers, an image of a mythological horned horse inspired by one rendered on a Lakota shield, and an image of a sacred Thunderbird - a powerful array of protective and symbolic entities. In addition, Halsey-Dutton features the words "talisman" and "omen." A very special painting, replete with impressive artistry as well as layers of historical and cultural meaning, floated upon a backdrop painted by the artist to resemble bison hide, and housed within a deep acrylic shadowbox frame to underscore the cultural importance of the theme and suggest a treasured museum artifact. In addition, this piece is painted on heavy-weight archival watercolor paper; the manner of paint application was intended to convey age and weathering; and the paper's deckled edge further imbues the piece with a sense of history. Size (painting): 30" L x 11" W (76.2 cm x 27.9 cm) Size (shadowbox): 34.4" L x 15.4" W x 2.7" deep (87.4 cm x 39.1 cm x 6.9 cm)

Bonnie Halsey-Dutton was born and raised in South Dakota and is inspired by the local cultures as well as their history. She has written the following statement about this piece which is attached to the verso, "There evidently is a human desire to understand and to bond with the cosmos. No matter what culture, mankind has always shown a need to connect with something greater than themselves. Perhaps it enables humanity to be in tune with the earth and to try to understand its place in it.

This painting explores the concept of ritual and the belief that man can influence the world around him.Talisman and ceremonial objects are found throughout time, with the hope that they will help to bring favor. Perhaps it is the possession of these very objects which helps humans to achieve that which they desire, merely by substantiating the belief that they can do so.

The thunderbird is a powerful image found depicted upon many Native American objects. The mythological horned horse image depicted in this painting is inspired by one found on a Lakota shield. In many cultures, protective imagery was added to shields as dictated by a vision or belief held by the owner. Also depicted in this painting are a shield, drum, feathers, and a prayer bundle. All are symbolic elements incorporated into this artwork, intended as an honored nod to history. The words: talisman and omen are incised into the painting."
