Description:

Bernhard Schultz (West Prussia/Germany, 1915 -2005), hand colored lithograph entitled "Medusa -Migof" in pencil at lower center, numbered 18/180 at lower left, signed and dated "Bernhard Schultze 69" in pencil at lower right, 1969 CE. Bernard Schultze was born in Schneidemuhl, West Prussia, and studied at art academies in Berlin and Dusseldorf from 1934 to 1939. Unfortunately, his entire body of work produced prior to 1945 was destroyed during an air raid in Berlin in 1945. Two years later Schultz moved to Frankfurt, Germany where he co-founded the artist group "Quadriga" in 1952. An avant-garde group, Quadriga aimed to depart from figurative and formalistic abstraction and explore Action Painting and Tachisme. After marrying artist Ursula Bluhm, Schultze began to create relief paintings with various materials adhered to the canvas. From 1957 on he created works that he dubbed "tabuskris" (tabulae scriptae) in which he combined painting and drawing. In 1961, Schultz created "Migofs", a term invented by Schultz referring to creatures and constructions that exist among natural beings. This hand-colored lithography, entitled "Medusa-Migof" in pencil at the lower center, is among Schultze's migof creations. A wonderfully imaginative depiction of Medusa, the Greek mythological monster with the visage of an woman and a coiffure comprised of snakes who according to legend could turn people to stone with one gaze into her eyes. Size: sheet measures 17.75" L x 12.5" W (45.1 cm x 31.8 cm); plate measures 11.75" L x 8.5" W (29.8 cm x 21.6 cm)
