A Victorian era silver brooch and a high-quality silver pendant of the Southern Cross. The Southern Cross or Crux is a star constellation in the southern sky used for navigation by the Tuareg - as Nomadic people, this was an important celestial marker and symbol, the 4 stars of the Crux represented Maerua crassifolia trees, used by Tuareg people as food for both camels and people and as medicine. The antique Victorian brooch is made from 73% to 79% silver with a higher 90% silver granulation, and niello patterning. Size of star pendant: 3.5" Diameter x 0.75" W (8.9 cm x 1.9 cm); silver quality: 73% to 79%; total weight: 113.7 grams

  • Condition: Niello brooch is repaired with a new brass pin and welding / repairs to verso of rim and niello back plate. Berber pendant has slightly loose rivets but all are intact. Some light surface wear with dark patina and toning.
