Description:

Near East, Arabian Peninsula, Yemen, Bedouin culture, ca. mid to late-20th century CE. A collection of wearable Bawsani style nickel brass jewelry, a necklace inlaid with lapis, earrings, and a ring. The necklace has cotton cords, multistrands of wood and brass beads and Pakistani 25 paisa coins dated 1975 and 1980. At the center is a bicone shaped pendant known as a hirz or taweez, the removable lid attached with a chain. Hirz amulet pendants are worn in many cultures throughout the Near East and into Southeast Asia with Islamic, Jewish, and Hindu-Buddhist influences. Yemen's geographical position between India and Africa created cross-cultural contacts, which greatly influenced Yemeni jewelry, but in Yemen the hirz was typically worn as part of a woman's wedding garb. Size of necklace strand: 20" L (50.8 cm); hirz pendant: 5" L x 1" W (12.7 cm x 2.5 cm); ring opening: 0.7" Diameter (1.8 cm); US ring size: 7.5; earrings w/ hooks: 2.35" L x 0.4" W (6 cm x 1 cm)

Bawsani jewelry is a traditional Yemeni style known for its intricate filigree work, often handcrafted by Jewish silversmiths, particularly the Bawsani family.
