Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE. A free-blown translucent glass drinking cup with faint bands of lavender visible in the glass, its form comprised of a rounded base with a smooth pontil scar, an inward-tapering body profile, and a flared rim which is ground smooth. This cup was probably used to drink wine at the table in a middle or upper class Roman household. Roman glassmakers reached incredible artistic heights with both free-blown vessels and mold blown forms that were used by ordinary Romans and also traded far beyond the Roman Empire. Roman glass vessels have been found in Scandinavia, India, and in Han Dynasty tombs in China. Size: 3.1" W x 2.45" H (7.9 cm x 6.2 cm)

#135611

  • Condition: Intact, with light surface wear commensurate with age. Very faint silvery iridescence on surface. Pontil mark is mostly worn away - a pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
