Description:

Medieval Middle East, Turkey/Persia, Seljuk Empire (sometimes Seljuq), ca. 10th to 12th centuries CE. A cast bronze vessel with a round-shouldered cylindrical body, a very thin conical neck, and a wide, round mouth with a concave depression studded with thirteen small holes for dispensing water. Rose water is used in many religious ceremonies in the Muslim world, and is sprinkled in dug graves to make them ready to receive bodies. This example has a delightfully decorated surface, covered with round, geometric, and floral motifs, including several on the broadest part of the body that look like crescent moons. The underside has a motif that looks like a star, but time has made it somewhat unclear. Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
